Part One Introduction to Hainan Medical College

Hainan Medical College is the only public-run medical university within Hainan Free Trade Port. It traces its origin back to Haiqiang Medical and Technical School founded in 1947 and the Medical College of Private Hainan University founded in 1948. Over more than 70 years of education, it has cultivated over 70,000 high-quality medical and health-care talents for China. It is one of the first pilot universities for the National Excellent Doctor Education and Training Program, one of the firstbatch pilot undergraduate universities for national major comprehensive reform, a high-level characteristic university under construction in Hainan Province, the leading institution of the National Emergency Medical Rescue Team (Hainan), the National On-water Emergency Medical Education and Training Base, and the National Maritime Emergency Medical Rescue Base. It is qualified to confer doctoral degrees.

Located in Haikou, the provincial capital of Hainan known as the “Coconut City”, the college has two campuses. The Chengxi Campus lies in Longhua District, Haikou, while the Guilin-yang Campus (under construction) is situated in Jiangdong New Area, Haikou. It encompasses 20 teaching institutions and has built a comprehensive, multi-level talent-training system covering juniorcollege, undergraduate, master’s and doctoral programs, fulltime education, adult education, international student education and continuing education. There are 15,288 fulltime students, including 108 doctoral candidates, 1,893 master’s candidates, 11,423 undergraduates, 575 international students, 854 juniorcollege students and 49 undergraduate preparatory students.

The college offers 30 undergraduate majors across three disciplines: Medicine, Science and Management. It has 5 nationallevel firstclass undergraduate major construction sites, 2 national-level featured majors, 1 National Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center and 1 National Clinical Teaching and Training Demonstration Center. Clinical Medicine is Hainan’s first discipline ranked within the top 1 % of ESI global rankings. Both Pharmacy and Clinical Medicine have passed professional accreditation by the Ministry of Education. There are 9 national key clinical specialties under development and 7 provincial firstclass disciplines. The college is authorized to confer doctoral degrees in the first-level discipline of Clinical Medicine, master’s degrees in five first-level disciplines (Basic Medicine, Clinical Medicine, Pharmacy, Traditional Chinese Medicine and Biology), as well as five professional master’s degrees (Clinical Medicine, Public Health, Nursing, Pharmacy and Stomatology). It passed the National Undergraduate Teaching Level Assessment with the grade of “Good” in 2006 and the National Undergraduate Teaching Audit Assessment in 2017.

The college boasts a high-caliber teaching faculty of 1,182 full-time teachers, among whom 850 hold senior professional-technical titles including 181 professors; 43.49 % of full-time teachers hold doctoral degrees. There are 8 academician workstations, with 9 part-time academicians from the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering, 4 Yangtze River Scholars, 7 national-level candidates for the National Hundred-Thousand-Ten-Thousand Talents Project, 3 National Excellent Teachers, 1 National Teaching Master for Tertiary Traditional Chinese Medicine Education, 28 experts entitled to Special Government Allowance of the State Council, 4 scholars selected for the Ministry of Education New Century Excellent Talents Support Program, and 7 Hainan Provincial High-Level Distinguished Talents.

Featuring tropical medicine as its educational characteristic, the college has developed well-established research directions in tropical medicine and built a “trinity” tropical-medicine system integrating teaching, scientific research and clinical practice. It hosts two Key Laboratories of the Ministry of Education for Tropical Translational Medicine and Emergency & Trauma Research, as well as one Key Laboratory for Tropical Disease Prevention and Control of the National Health Commission. It sponsors Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Medicine and Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Biomedicine, the only two Chinese fullyEnglish SCI-indexed journals on tropical medicine, ranked 10th and 18th globally among SCI tropicalmedicine journals respectively. The Impact Factor of Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Medicine has exceeded 3 for the first time and entered Q2 quartile, hitting a new historical high. It also sponsors One Health Bulletin, China’s inaugural international academic journal in the field of OneHealth.

The college maintains 101 teaching, practicaltraining and internship bases. Three Grade-A tertiary general hospitals — Hainan Affiliated Hospital, the First Affiliated Hospital and the Second Affiliated Hospital — serve as directlyaffiliated hospitals. Hainan Provincial Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine acts as the Clinical College of Traditional Chinese Medicine of Hainan Medical College. Besides, there are 8 non-directly-affiliated hospitals and 12 teaching hospitals, providing solid guarantees for clinical teaching.

Committed to open-door education, the college has established cooperative ties with well-known domestic and overseas universities including University of Nebraska-Lincoln (USA), University of Basel (Switzerland), Mahidol University (Thailand), the University of Hong Kong, Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine and Nanjing Medical University. It jointly set up the International Research Center for Aging and Cancer with the Samuel Waxman Cancer Research Foundation (USA) and Ruijin Hospital, Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine. It co-founded Sinoforeign cooperative institution Hainan Medical College University of the West of England College with University of the West of England (UK). It initiated the Belt-and-Road Tropical Medicine Alliance consisting of 122 universities and research institutions from 30 countries and regions, and has successfully held four International Tropical Medicine Summit Forums.

Carrying forward the spirit of “Selfimprovement, Unity, Aspiration and Enterprise”, abiding by the motto “Virtue, Rigor, Erudition, Harmony”, and adhering to the educational philosophy of cultivating “Red Doctors”, the college founded Hainan’s first university graduate entrepreneurship incubation base. Its students have won multiple nationallevel awards including the first prize in the undergraduate group of the National HigherEducation Cup Mathematical Modeling Competition and the Special Prize in the 1st National Pharmaceutical Universities Pharmacy & Chinese Materia Medica Experimental Teaching Reform Competition. The college has also received honors such as “National Advanced Collective for University Graduate Employment” and “National Advanced Unit for Research & Practice of Entrepreneurship Education in Higher Education”.

For applicants born with foreign nationality (without Chinese nationality), whose one or both parents are Chinese citizens settled overseas: besides meeting general international-student admission criteria, applicants must hold valid foreign passport or nationality certification for no less than 4 consecutive years, and have actual overseas residence of no less than 2 years within the latest 4 years (by April 30 of the enrollment year). Nine months of physical residence overseas within one calendar year counts as one year, verified by entryexit stamps.

II. Important Notes

1. All submitted documents will not be returned regardless of admission outcome. Applicants warrant the authenticity of personal information, supporting materials and certificates. Any integrity violation will result in disqualification.

2. Valid applicant phone number and email address must be provided along with application documents.

3. Undergraduate applicants shall take the universityorganized entrance examination (Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology); examination results serve as admission reference.

4. For “1+5-year” Clinical Medicine students: Only those obtaining HSK-4 after one-year language training can formally enter the 5-year Clinical Medicine undergraduate program. Students failing HSK-4 may either leave college or comply with admission criteria for standard 5-year intake.

5. For standard 5-year Clinical Medicine students: Students without HSK-4 upon admission but with adequate Chinese proficiency may sit for the collegeorganized International Chinese Proficiency Standard Test. Successful candidates receive one-year probationary status for Clinical Medicine. They must obtain HSK-4 within probation while completing prescribed coursework; failure will terminate probationary enrollment.

6. Special Reminder: The major name printed on graduation and degree certificates is “clinical medicine”. Before applying for the 1+5year or 5year Clinical Medicine track, applicants shall independently verify with authorities in their home country whether this qualification grants eligibility for local medical licensing.

Application & Registration Deadlines

· Chinese Preparatory Students Application Deadline for Spring intake: March 20, 2024 Registration Deadline: March 30, 2024. Late arrivals will not be accepted.

· Undergraduate Degree Students Application Deadline: August 20, 2024 Registration Deadline: September 20, 2024. Late arrivals will not be accepted. ★ For Hainan Provincial Government Scholarship applicants: documents must be submitted by April 15, 2024. Late submissions will not be processed.

1. Eligibility Review and Assessment: Expert panels conduct document review and admission assessment to confirm the proposed admission list and issue admission notices.

2. Dispatch Admission Documents: After confirming applicant acceptance of offer, the college mails hard copies of the Admission Notice and JW202 Visa Application Form for Foreign Students Coming to China to applicants.

3. Visa Application: Upon receiving Admission Notice and JW202 form, applicants apply for student visa at Chinese Embassy or ConsulateGeneral on their own.

4. Registration: Applicants shall complete onsite registration at Hainan Medical College by the deadline stated on Admission Notice, presenting original documents plus copies of all application materials. Registration deadlines are March 30, 2024 for preparatory students and September 20, 2024 for undergraduates. Students unable to register on time must submit supporting documents in advance for leave application. Approved deferral shall not exceed two weeks. Admission will be cancelled for unapproved late arrivals.

Part Six Scholarships

I. Hainan Provincial Government Scholarship for International Students

Final awardees are determined according to allocated scholarship quotas and the Management Measures for Hainan Provincial Government Scholarship for International Students of Hainan Medical College. Applicants shall submit materials within specified periods. Scholarship recipients must participate in mandatory annual scholarship review after enrollment. Assessment failure will lead to suspension or revocation of scholarship entitlement.

II. Hainan Medical College International Student Scholarship

The college grants this scholarship at the end of each academic year to reward highachieving international students with good conduct.
