Brief Introduction to Hainan Medical University
Located in Haikou, the provincial capital of Hainan known as the “Coconut City”, Hainan Medical University traces its origins back to Haiqiang Medical and Technical School founded in 1947 and the Medical College of Private Hainan University established in 1948. It comprises three campuses: Chengxi (main campus), Guilinyang (new campus) and Longhua, covering a total area of 1,416.71 mu.
Guided by its school motto “Virtue, Rigor, Erudition, Harmony” and carrying forward the spirit of “Selfimprovement, Unity, Aspiration and Enterprise”, the university has built an integrated six-in-one medical education system covering teaching, clinical practice, scientific research, international cooperation, social service and cultural inheritance. It has cultivated more than 70,000 graduates for the nation. It is one of the first pilot universities under the National Excellent Doctor Education and Training Program, one of the first-batch universities for national undergraduate major comprehensive reform pilot projects, a high-level characteristic university under construction in Hainan Province, and the leading institution of the National Emergency Medical Rescue Team (Hainan). The university has ushered in a new era for Hainan to independently cultivate highcaliber medical talents.
The university delivers multilevel and comprehensive education, recruiting students nationwide. Its programs include full-time undergraduate, master’s and doctoral postgraduate degrees, international student education, as well as adult and continuing education. There are 15,340 full-time students, including 12,207 undergraduates (633 international students included) and 1,760 master’s and doctoral candidates. The university has 11,834 faculty and medical staff in total, among whom 1,100 are fulltime teachers, with 749 based on the main campus. 479 hold senior professionaltechnical titles, including 163 professors. Nearly 51.27 % of full-time teachers hold doctoral degrees.
The university has 1 Member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, 2 National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars recipients, 1 Yangtze River Scholar, 7 national-level candidates for the National Hundred-Thousand-Ten-Thousand Talents Project, 4 National Excellent Teachers, 1 National Teaching Master for Tertiary Traditional Chinese Medicine Education, and 5 scholars selected for the Ministry of Education New Century Excellent Talents Support Program. There are 15 Hainan Provincial DoubleHundred Talent Teams.
Thirty-six undergraduate majors are offered across four disciplines: Medicine, Science, Management and Engineering. The university boasts 5 nationallevel firstclass undergraduate major development sites, 2 national-level featured majors, and 3 national-level first-class undergraduate courses. It hosts one National Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center, one National Clinical Teaching and Training Demonstration Center and one National (Traditional Chinese Medicine) Clinical Teaching and Training Demonstration Center.
There are three large Grade-A tertiary directly-affiliated hospitals: Hainan Affiliated Hospital (Hainan Provincial People’s Hospital), the First Affiliated Hospital and the Second Affiliated Hospital, with a combined total of 7,020 open hospital beds. Besides, the university has 10 non-directly-affiliated hospitals, 12 teaching hospitals and 2 collaborativelybuilt Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, providing solid support for clinical teaching. It has 15 national key clinical specialties and 7 provincial key disciplines. Clinical Medicine ranks within the top 5 ‰ of ESI global discipline rankings, and Pharmacology & Toxicology ranks within the top 1 %.
The university is authorized to confer doctoral degrees in the first-level discipline of Clinical Medicine, and master’s degrees in five first-level disciplines: Basic Medicine, Clinical Medicine, Pharmacy, Traditional Chinese Medicine and Biology. It also offers five professional master’s degree programs: Clinical Medicine, Public Health, Nursing, Pharmacy and Stomatology.

II. Application Procedures
Applicants shall submit applications online via Hainan Medical University International Student Application Service System: https://ism.muhn.edu.cn/stu//
Alternatively, applicants may download relevant forms from the International Education College website: https://www.muhn.edu.cn/gjxy/zsgl/xzzx.htm, complete the documents and send them to email: hnmu_enquire@muhn.edu.cn.
Application period is generally from February to the end of July each year. Applicants are recommended to complete all application procedures before midJuly. For scholarship applications, complete submission is required no later than May 20.
III. Application Requirements and Document Checklist
(A) Undergraduate Degree Applicants
1. Basic personal requirements: Age 1835 (flexible for selffunded applicants); hold valid ordinary foreign passport; be a nonChinese national; abide by Chinese laws and regulations as well as university rules; demonstrate integrity and good health.
2. Personal statement and study plan.
3. Academic qualification verification: Notarized highschool graduation certificate or equivalent qualification issued by local education authorities.
4. Transcripts: Notarized complete high-school academic transcripts.
5. Chinese proficiency certificate: HSK-4 or above for Chinese-taught programs.
6. Passport: Information page of ordinary private passport (valid for more than 1 year). Former Chinese citizens who have acquired foreign nationality shall additionally submit householdcancellation certificate and proof of foreign nationality acquisition.
7. Application Form for International Students of Hainan Medical University, downloaded from the International Education College official website and duly completed.
8. Other documents: Physical examination report; notarized noncriminal record certificate. Supplementary documents proving comprehensive personal competence may be submitted optionally.
(B) Master’s Degree Applicants
1. Basic personal requirements: Age under 38 (flexible for self-funded applicants); hold valid ordinary foreign passport; be a non-Chinese national; abide by Chinese laws and university regulations; demonstrate integrity and good health.
2. Personal statement and study plan (no less than 1,000 Chinese characters).
3. Degree certificate and authentication: Original bachelor’s degree certificate. For overseas degrees, authentication issued by the Chinese Service Center for Scholarly Exchange (CSCSE) is required. For degrees obtained within mainland China, authentication report from China HigherEducation Student Information Network (CHSI) is required. Graduating students may submit expected graduation proof first; formal degree certificate and authentication must be submitted before enrollment. Completed graduates shall provide authentication reports upon application.
4. Transcripts: Full official undergraduate transcripts.
5. Two letters of recommendation from associate professors or higher-rank scholars / senior industry professionals.
6. Passport: Information page of ordinary private passport (valid for more than 1 year). Former Chinese citizens who have acquired foreign nationality shall additionally submit householdcancellation certificate and proof of foreign nationality acquisition.

(C) Important Notes
1. One colour standard ID photo (≤ 200 KB; format: *.jpg, *.jpeg, *.png; pixel ≥ 295 × 413).
2. All submitted application documents will not be returned regardless of admission outcome. Applicants guarantee authenticity of submitted information and documents. Falsification will result in disqualification of application, admission or student status.
3. Documents not issued in Chinese or English must be accompanied by notarized Chinese or English translations.
4. The university and its faculties reserve the right to request original hard copies or authentication reports for further verification.
5. Applicants must provide valid phone number and email address together with application documents.
6. Undergraduate applicants are required to sit for universityorganized entrance assessment (Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology), results serve as admission reference.
7. For “1+5-year” Clinical Medicine students: Only students obtaining HSK-4 after oneyear language training can formally enter the 5-year Clinical Medicine program. Those failing HSK-4 may either leave the university or meet the admission criteria for standard 5-year intake.
8. For standard 5year Clinical Medicine students: Students without HSK-4 upon admission but with adequate Chinese competence may take the university-organized International Chinese Proficiency Test. Passing candidates are granted one-year probationary status in Clinical Medicine. They must obtain HSK-4 within this probation year while completing prescribed coursework; failure will lead to termination of probationary enrollment.
9. Special Reminder: The English name of the major printed on graduation and degree certificates is “Clinical Medicine”. Before applying for either the 1+5-year or standard 5-year Clinical Medicine track, applicants must independently verify with authorities in their home country whether the qualification qualifies them for local medical licensing.
IV. Application and Admission
(A) Submission of Application
Submit all complete documents to designated email: hnmu_enquire@muhn.edu.cn before application deadlines.
(B) Application & Registration Deadlines
- May 20, 2025: Deadline for Hainan Provincial Government International Student Scholarship applications - July 15, 2025: Deadline for selffunded applications - September 15, 2025: Deadline for onsite registration
(C) Eligibility Review and Assessment
The university organizes expert panels for document review and assessment. Admission list will be confirmed and admission notices will be issued.
(D) Issuance of Documents
After confirming the applicant’s acceptance of admission offer, the university issues the Admission Notice and JW202 Visa Application Form for Foreign Students Coming to China.
(E) Special Reminder
Students unable to register on time must apply for leave with supporting documents in advance. Approved deferral shall not exceed four weeks. Failure to register within permitted period without approval will result in cancellation of admission.

Notes: According to Chinese regulations, international students must reside in university dormitories for their first academic year unless special exemption is granted. Starting from the second academic year, students may apply for offcampus accommodation with complete rental documentation approved by the university. All fees are denominated in Renminbi (CNY).
VI. Scholarship Opportunities
Available scholarship programs: Hainan Provincial Government Scholarship for International Students and ASEAN Scholarship. Scholarship coverage period: 45 academic years for undergraduates, 3 academic years for master’s students. The scholarship covers tuition, accommodation and medical insurance; all other expenses are borne by the student.

1. Satisfy all admission requirements for Hainan Medical University international degreeprogram students.
2. Not receiving Chinese Government Scholarship or any other concurrent scholarship funding.

Important Notice: Scholarship recipients must participate in mandatory annual scholarship review after enrollment. Failure in assessment will result in suspension or revocation of scholarship entitlement.
