Brief Introduction to Hainan Medical University

Located in Haikou, the provincial capital of Hainan known as the “Coconut City”, Hainan Medical University traces its origins back to Haiqiang Medical and Technical School founded in 1947 and the Medical College of Private Hainan University established in 1948. It has three campuses: Chengxi (main campus), Guilin-yang (new campus) and Longhua, covering a total area of 1,416.71 mu.

The university has developed a comprehensive, multi-level talent-training system with nationwide student recruitment, covering fulltime undergraduate, master’s and doctoral postgraduate programs, international student education, adult education and continuing education. There are 15,340 fulltime students, including 12,207 undergraduates (633 international students included) and 1,760 master’s and doctoral candidates.

Thirty-six undergraduate majors are offered across four disciplines: Medicine, Science, Management and Engineering. The university has 5 national-level first-class undergraduate major construction sites, 2 national-level featured majors, and 3 national-level first-class undergraduate courses. It operates one National Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center, one National Clinical Teaching and Training Demonstration Center and one National (Traditional Chinese Medicine) Clinical Teaching and Training Demonstration Center.

It has three large Grade-A tertiary directly-affiliated general hospitals: Hainan Affiliated Hospital (Hainan Provincial People’s Hospital), the First Affiliated Hospital and the Second Affiliated Hospital, with a combined total of 7,020 open hospital beds. In addition, the university has 10 non-directly-affiliated hospitals, 12 teaching hospitals and 2 collaboratively-built Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, providing strong support for clinical teaching. It boasts 15 national key clinical specialties and 7 provincial key disciplines. Clinical Medicine ranks within the top 5 ‰ of ESI global discipline rankings, and Pharmacology & Toxicology ranks within the top 1 %.

The university is authorized to confer doctoral degrees in the first-level discipline of Clinical Medicine, and master’s degrees in five first-level disciplines: Basic Medicine, Clinical Medicine, Pharmacy, Traditional Chinese Medicine and Biology. It also offers five professional master’s degree programs: Clinical Medicine, Public Health, Nursing, Pharmacy and Stomatology.

Applicants shall submit applications online via Hainan Medical University International Student Application Service System: https://ism.muhn.edu.cn/stu//

Alternatively, applicants may download relevant documents from the International Education College website: https://www.muhn.edu.cn/gjxy/zsgl/xzzx.htm, complete the forms and submit them to email: hnmu_enquire@muhn.edu.cn.

The application period generally runs from February to the end of July each year. Applicants are recommended to finish all application procedures before mid-July. For scholarship applications, submissions must be completed no later than May 20.

III. Application Requirements and Document Checklist

Please complete and submit the documents listed below.

(A) Undergraduate Degree Applicants

1. Basic personal requirements: Age 18-35 (flexible for selffunded applicants); hold a valid ordinary foreign passport and be a non-Chinese national; abide by Chinese laws, regulations and university rules; be honest and in good physical health.

2. Personal statement and study plan.

3. Academic qualification verification report: Notarized highschool graduation certificate or equivalent qualification issued by local education authorities is required in principle.

4. Transcripts: Notarized complete highschool academic transcripts.

5. Chinese proficiency report: Applicants shall provide valid HSK test results meeting program requirements (HSK-4 or above for Chinesetaught programs).

6. Passport: Information page of ordinary private passport (valid for more than 1 year). Former Chinese citizens who have acquired foreign nationality shall additionally submit household-cancellation certificate and proof of foreign nationality acquisition.

7. Application Form for International Students of Hainan Medical University: Downloaded from the official website of the International Education College, duly completed and submitted.

8. Other documents: Physical examination report; notarized noncriminal record certificate. Supplementary materials demonstrating comprehensive personal competence may be submitted optionally.

9. Score report of the Chinese-based Scholastic Competence Assessment for international undergraduate applicants (CSCA). Mathematics is a mandatory subject; applicants may choose Chemistry or Physics as additional subjects.

10. Scanned copy of Hainan Medical University Financial Guarantee Letter for International Students in China together with supporting financial documents, to verify sources of funding including personal funds, family sponsorship, government grants or financial guarantor support.

(B) Important Notes

1. One colour standard ID photo (file size ≤ 200 KB; formats: *.jpg, *.jpeg, *.png; pixel ≥ 295 × 413).

2. All submitted application documents will not be returned regardless of admission outcome. Applicants warrant that all personal information, certificates and supporting materials are true and accurate. Falsification, once identified by admissions or verification authorities, will lead to disqualification of application, admission or student status.

3. Documents not issued in Chinese or English must be accompanied by notarized Chinese or English translations.

4. The university and its faculties reserve the right to request original hard copies or certified documents from designated verification agencies for further inspection.

5. A valid phone number and email address must be provided together with application documents.

6. For “1+5-year” Clinical Medicine students: Only those who obtain HSK-4 after oneyear language training may formally enter the 5-year Clinical Medicine undergraduate program. Students failing to obtain HSK-4 may either leave the university or meet the admission criteria for the standard 5-year intake.

7. For standard 5-year Clinical Medicine students: Students without HSK-4 upon admission but with adequate Chinese competence may sit for the university-organized International Chinese Proficiency Standard Test. Successful candidates will be granted one-year probationary status in Clinical Medicine. They must obtain HSK-4 within this probation period while completing required Clinical Medicine coursework. Failure to obtain HSK-4 will result in termination of probationary enrollment.

8. Special Reminder: The major name printed on graduation and degree certificates is “clinical medicine”. Before applying for either the 1+5-year or standard 5-year Clinical Medicine track, applicants must independently confirm with authorities in their home country whether this qualification qualifies them for local medical licensing.

IV. Application and Admission

(A) Submission of Application

Submit all complete application documents to the designated email hnmu_enquire@muhn.edu.cn prior to application deadlines.

(B) Application & Registration Deadlines

- May 20, 2026: Deadline for Hainan Provincial Government International Student Scholarship applications - July 15, 2026: Deadline for self-funded applications - September 15, 2026: Deadline for on-site registration

(C) Eligibility Review and Assessment

The university sets up an expert panel to conduct document review and admission assessment. A proposed admission list will be confirmed and admission notices will be issued.

(D) Issuance of Documents

After confirming the applicant’s acceptance of the admission offer, the university issues the Admission Notice and JW202 Visa Application Form for Foreign Students Coming to China.

(E) Special Reminder

Students unable to register on schedule must submit supporting documents in advance to apply for leave. Approved deferral shall not exceed four weeks. Admission will be cancelled for those who fail to register within the permitted period without official approval.

Notes: In accordance with relevant Chinese laws and regulations, international students shall live in university dormitories for their first academic year unless special exemption is granted. Starting from the second academic year, students may submit applications together with rentalrelated documents to apply for offcampus accommodation near the university. All fees are denominated in Renminbi (CNY).

VI. Scholarship Opportunities

Available scholarship programs: Hainan Provincial Government Scholarship for International Students and ASEAN Scholarship. Scholarship coverage period: 4-6 academic years for undergraduates; 3 academic years for master’s students. The scholarship covers tuition fees, accommodation fees and medical insurance premiums. All other expenses shall be borne by students themselves.

(A) Scholarship Eligibility

1. Meet all admission requirements for Hainan Medical University international degree-program students.

2. Not receiving Chinese Government Scholarship or any other concurrent scholarship funding.

Important Notice: Scholarship recipients must participate in mandatory annual scholarship review after enrollment. Failure in assessment will result in suspension or revocation of scholarship entitlement.
