World‑class Intangible Cultural Heritage — Chinese Paper‑cut

“Chinese paper‑cut art is amazing!” said Su Yao, a Pakistani student from the Grade‑2022 Clinical Medicine programme. “I felt inner peace while doing paper‑cutting.”

“Teacher, look! This is the national flag of China!” said Li Xin, a Pakistani student from the Autumn‑entry Class of Grade‑2023 Clinical Medicine, with delight. “I love China, and China is my second home!”

On the afternoon of February 6, 2024, the School of International Education of Hainan Medical University held a group psychological‑counselling activity — the Chinese Paper‑cut Psychological‑healing Salon for international students staying on campus during winter vacation. As one event of the series “Joyfully Experiencing the Chinese New Year”, themed “Paper‑cutting Inherits Spiritual Nurturing, Joyfully Experiencing the Chinese New Year”, the salon adopted Chinese intangible‑cultural‑heritage paper‑cut art as a carrier to give international students who could not return home over the holiday a “spiritual massage”.

The event took place at the “Soul Posthouse” Emotional‑recycling Station of the Coffee‑Tea Culture Lounge in Hainan Medical University. At the opening of the activity, Teacher Fu Lin introduced the origin and significance of Chinese paper‑cutting to international students. Teachers Dong Dongdong and Wang Ruying guided students in paper‑cut creation. Amid mellow coffee aroma, students had inner spiritual conversations with themselves through paper‑cutting.

Chinese paper‑cutting was inscribed on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2009. It is a traditional art form with long‑standing history and unique aesthetics, capable of bringing spiritual healing through creation. The paper‑cutting process is quiet and requires no verbal communication, transcending boundaries of country, ethnicity and religious belief. Meanwhile it is spiritually fulfilling: it serves as an inner dialogue, enhancing inner peace, self‑confidence and a sense of well‑being.

Applying Chinese paper‑cut art to group psychological counselling for international students marks a new attempt by Hainan Medical University to leverage traditional Chinese culture for international‑student mental‑health services. Given international students’ ethnic, religious differences and the barrier of non‑native language, this non‑verbal creative‑therapy trial achieved remarkable outcomes. The successful integration of paper‑cutting into mental‑health work boosts confidence in spreading traditional Chinese culture and broadens practical approaches for psychological education targeting international students.

“Thank you, teacher. I will stick my paper‑cut work on my dormitory door.” said He Linglong, a Comorian student from the Grade‑2020 International Clinical‑Medicine Class. “I will also take photos to show my family. Chinese Spring‑Festival activities are so rich and colourful.”

Cheng Feifei, a Pakistani student from the Grade‑2023 International Clinical‑Medicine Class, cut a little monkey. “I learned my Chinese zodiac sign after coming to China. I was born in the Year of the Monkey,” she said.

Chinese paper‑cut art allowed international students to savour the beauty of traditional Chinese culture while receiving spiritual nourishment.
